Sony e-book: characteristics, description, reviews, photos. Review of e-book Sony PRS-T2 Firmware and utilities from rupor

As you know, Sony, which used to specialize in expensive, albeit high-quality readers, has clearly realized in the past two years that it will not see this market at all if it does not try to keep up with the engines named Amazon and Barnes & Noble, which flooded the market with really cheap and at the same time quite interesting readers Amazon Kindle Touch, Nook Simple Touch and so on, and these manufacturers present new models with enviable regularity. Sony tried to enter this market with the Sony Reader PRS-T1, however, although the reader was very good and cost only $150 (in the States), Amazon was in serious competition, which, in addition to the Kindle Touch for $139, also brought the super-cheap new Klindle to the market for $79, as well as Barnes & Noble, which for $139 began to offer Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight - he could not make it up. But Sony, of course, did not back down and focused on further development of competitive readers, as a result of which a new model appeared called Sony Reader PRS-T2, and Sony now releases only it, having discontinued all other models. Probably, this is really quite reasonable, because the old expensive models on the market are no longer listed at all and there is no point in releasing them. But here's what the new model from Sony is and how competitive it is - we'll see now, since it came to me for a review, thanks to the Reader-sony.ru online store.

Sony Reader PRS-T2 Specifications Operating system-Android

Net- Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) push button configuration
Audio- No
Memory card- microSD up to 32 GB
Battery- lithium-ion, 1000 mAh
Formats- ePub eBook, PDF, TXT, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP In general, the reader differs very little from the previous model in terms of characteristics, except that the audio was removed (for some, its presence is important), plus the body has become literally 4 grams lighter. This reader is available in three colors: black, white and red. But there, as far as I understood, some interesting things should have been added inside. Now let's see what's going on there. Delivery and equipment Supplied in a traditional box.
The kit includes a reader, a USB-microUSB cable, some brochures and a simple stylus (it was also in the previous model).
The stylus is a regular plastic stylus with a small tip on the side of the writing head and a grip on the back so that it can be attached to a breast pocket.
The grip, by the way, is not superfluous - the reader itself does not provide a slot for the stylus, which is more than strange: without a slot, it will be lost for one, two, or three. And most likely, once or twice. However, according to the previous model, practice shows that the stylus is simply thrown somewhere and not used. The cover is not included, it must be purchased separately: two options are available - a regular cover and a cover with a built-in flashlight. The reader itself is very similar to the previous model both in form and execution: the same simple black plastic with a soft-touch coating. It is not particularly scratched and does not get dirty with fingers, but it looks, to be honest, unremarkable. Readers from Sony didn’t look like that before, not like that!
There is practically nothing on the back cover, except for the microSD slot, closed with a rubber plug.
At the bottom - Reset, microUSB output, power button. I have said and will say that the power button on the bottom is the most idiotic (or rather, inconvenient for the user) solution that you can think of. Nevertheless, it has now become a fashion for almost all modern readers. And even Sony, which has always had such a convenient turn-on rocker from above (the rocker - so that you do not accidentally press it), and she went on about this idiotic fashion. Shame on them all! A shame! The buttons on the lower front panel have changed and, in my opinion, they are noticeably better - they are much more convenient to press compared to the old version, where the buttons were in the form of stripes.
Here, compare with the buttons of the PRS-T1 model.
The buttons for the action performed remained unchanged: scrolling back and forth, the "home" key, return and menu (aka settings). With the sides around the display here, unfortunately, everything is just as bad as in the previous model. The sides are too high for a touch screen: pressing the icons in the corners is particularly inconvenient!
When the reader is connected to a computer, a question appears on its screen whether we want the computer to see the reader's drives. If the answer to the question is yes, the device will have a reader drive of about 1.3 GB and a small drive of 10 MB, which contains distributions of the Reader program for installation under a PC or Mac.

In principle, you can not use this program, but simply upload media data to the media folder in the reader's memory.

However, the program is actually quite convenient. You can import suitable media data (files and folders) into it, make collections, and then synchronize all this with the reader.

Sync Options

In addition, if you make all sorts of drawings, notes, bookmarks, and so on in the reader, and you don’t want to accidentally lose them, everything will be saved when you synchronize through this program with a computer. Russification In general, there is no special need for Russification of the reader - the reader directly "out of the box" normally understands Cyrillic in the titles of books and in the text itself. Russification will be needed for the search: so that you can set Russian words, because now there is only a Latin keyboard. Device operation The main page has undergone some changes. At the top there is still the last book read with various information, then there is a list of the last four books added (there were three in the old version), and at the end there are three icons: bookshelf, store, applications (before the icons went all at once, but on the first page there were four of them, on the second - the rest).

We go to the section of the bookshelf (Bookshelves). Books can be displayed as a preview of covers, or as a list.

Cover preview

List

Titles are sorted by date, title, author, filename and last read.

You can also search by name, but only Latin is supported in the factory firmware. Open an EPUB book.

Press the "Menu" button (it's also the settings).

Navigation- there you can return the previous viewing settings, call up the menu, go to a specific page using a convenient slider.

View mode - here you can set the placement of pages on a sheet (1, 2, 3 columns - 1, 4, 6 pages - or alignment in landscape mode), cropping pages and adjusting the brightness.

Column mode - you can display 4-6 pages per sheet.

Screen brightness setting mode - by default, the brightness is set to full, but I don’t understand why using these settings to reduce it on electronic ink.

Font settings- choice of typeface and size. Skittles offered 8 options - for all tastes.

Fonts - six plus the original of the document itself.

We change the size to a larger one.

And this is the smallest plus - we change the headset to Verdana.

Changing font props throughout the book is very fast. Now let's switch to note mode. They can be drawn with a finger or a stylus directly over the text, an eraser is also available to erase what has been drawn.

Menu section "More".

Search in the factory firmware is done only in Latin.

In the settings, you can choose to turn off notes over text.

Section "Information" (Info) - information about the publication.

Bookmarks are made very simply - just press your finger or stylus on the page on the top right, a special icon will appear and the bookmark will be added to the list.

Here is a bookmark and a handwritten note on the same page.

From the additional menu, you can send a link directly to Facebook if access is made there in the reader settings. The title of the book and your comments will be sent. It all looks something like this.

Whom to give access to such posts - you can determine in the reader settings. That seems to be all the mechanisms for working with a document. I also checked how PDF is read there. It seems to read normally, but on such a screen you can normally see only such documents that are laid out for A5 format.

In Pdf, the font zoom works, however, the page is enlarged, so the page has to be scrolled with the paging keys - and this, of course, is not reading, but some kind of tears.

In bookshelf mode, you can choose from three options: just a shelf with a full set of books, collections, and Evernote notebooks. (Support for Evernote and Facebook are new features in this model.) As you know, Sony readers cannot treat folders as collections, so collections must be created manually (or using special programs). It is more or less convenient to compile collections in the Reader for PC program - there you simply mark which publications to take and add them to the appropriate collection. Well, you can also add certain editions to the collection right in the reader.

Access to the Evernote note manager is also done in the settings. However, there you can select only one notebook to upload to the reader, and only one special notebook is selected to upload notes from the reader to Evernote. That is, the functionality is extremely truncated, so it is not clear why it was introduced at all. Here is a list of notes in the Wine notebook.

The note can be opened in full screen.

Reader Store- a branded online store from Sony, where you can purchase and immediately download various publications and periodicals into the reader.

Application section.

public literature- an application that gives easy access to public library e-books. An appropriate library card is required to use the electronic collections of the native public library, and Adobe ID reader authorization to access protected books.

Browser- a normal browser for surfing pages. Using it, of course, is very inconvenient - compared to tablets.

Here is the menu that appears when working with the browser.

All notes- List of all made notes and bookmarks.

Dictionary- Dictionaries built into the reader. You can enter a word and get an interpretation.

handwritten notes- just individual handwritten notes.

Text notes- Notes typed on the on-screen keyboard.

Pictures- view downloaded images.

Full screen image and its options. By the way, pay attention to the tracks from the previous pages - I'll write more about this later.

firmware Special extended firmware for this model has not yet been distributed, but at least you can install CoolReader to read the FB2 format (who really needs it). In addition, officially supplied readers out of the box should support this feature - they will appear later. Well, judging by what firmware was made for the PRS-T1 model, a bunch of additional features will obviously soon appear for the PRS-T2 - there is Android inside. Price In the States, the reader costs $130. It is not yet officially delivered to Russia, you can buy it somewhere for 6000 rubles. It is assumed that officially it will be delivered to Russia for about 6500 rubles. Observations at work and conclusions The reader is quite nimble, pages for electronic paper are flipped very quickly. Also, the on-screen keyboard has become noticeably more responsive: the input delay is, of course, visible, but it is no longer as long as before, it is already quite possible to use it. In this model, Sony decided to deal with power consumption in a peculiar way (it is, as it happens with readers, low): now the page is completely updated only once every 15 flips. In general, this is bad, because when the page is rarely completely updated, tracks from previous pages remain on it. Of course, here the electronic paper is very modern and the tracks are not too noticeable, but still noticeable - especially when viewing pictures. I dug through all the settings to find where it is disabled, but the first time I did not find it. In the end, kind people suggested - they put this setting in "Settings-> Application Prefferences-> Book / Periodicals -> Refresh Display", which is completely illogical, because the option applies to the entire reader, and not just to the settings of periodicals. Of the major innovations, I found almost nothing here - the software has changed little, well, frail Facebook support has been added (send a link to the book to your account - oh, what an amazing opportunity) and Evernote (view only one notebook and send pictures to a special notebook - You can also be stunned with happiness). Only the buttons have really changed, but they are not so often used with a touch screen. So, in my opinion, I have not yet seen much point in switching to this model. Disappointed. And this, mind you, in the face of fierce competition for the reader market, and Sony has almost lost this fight. Something they do not catch mice, absolutely. Comparison Now we compare this reader with others present on the Russian (it primarily interests us) market. This Sony PRS-T2 costs 6500 rubles (we will assume so). Amazon Kindle Touch - also somewhere around 6500. The software is very similar, but only supports its own MOBI format, into which EPUB needs to be converted (however, this can be done with one button). If you look at Russian prices, then I would choose a model from Sony. Nook The Simple Touch - I didn’t find it on sale (4500 rubles in one store), but the model costs only about 5-6 thousand rubles, and it not only reads EPUB normally, but also has the only really convenient screen backlight without any covers. I currently like this model the most. I should also mention the PocketBook Touch, which costs about 6,500 rubles, which I really liked when testing and which this Sony definitely plugs up on all fronts, plus it supports FB2 and a whole bunch of other formats: its software is an order of magnitude cooler, well, Opportunities - Sony simply did not stand nearby. True, I can’t say how long this PocketBook will last (previous models sometimes had problems with survivability), but so far there haven’t been any complaints. Thus, if they ask me what I would choose from these models myself now, I would answer that in Russia I would choose Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight or PocketBook Touch. In favor of the Sony PRS-T2 model in comparative characteristics (in Russia, I emphasize), I can’t find anything yet. Another thing - if they give. Then - yes, the reader is like a reader. Read, enjoy.

Flashing the Sony PRS-T2 e-book

Introduction

It is easy to draw a conclusion about the relative popularity of Sony PRS-T1 and Sony PRS-T2 devices by studying the reader's mail of our site, as well as paying attention to the activity of users of the two most popular forums - The-ebook.org and w3bsit3-dns.com. Despite the fact that the new PRS-T2 went on sale in August 2012, most people prefer the previous one, PRS-T1. The explanation is simple: the appearance on the market of Sony PRS-T1 in September 2011 was a kind of sensation. In terms of most parameters and capabilities, this e-book significantly "furnished" competitors, while it had a relatively low price, and the Android operating system used made it possible to modify the software. The appearance of the new model PRS-T2 on the market has gone almost unnoticed. In terms of its capabilities, the new model practically did not differ from the previous one, but compared to the new models from competitors, the only advantages left were compactness, record efficiency and high build quality. As for modifying the Sony PRS-T2 software with third-party software, this possibility has been hidden even further. It is more difficult to flash the Sony PRS-T2 with alternative packages than the PRS-T1, and not all versions of this device allow the installation of third-party software. So there is nothing surprising in the fact that many consumers have turned to Kindle and Nook e-readers, which have backlit screens and are stitched with a bang.

For a long time, an article about flashing Sony PRS-T2 with third-party software was practically not in demand, and we constantly put off writing it "for later" - until those times when there will be enough people interested in this issue. We believe that this moment has come.

Story

E-books PRS-T1 and PRS-T2 work on the Android operating system version 2.1.1. The manufacturer installed on these books the applications he developed, including Sony's own shell. But he touched not only application software. The developers "cut" part of the functionality of the operating system. In particular, they deprived the end user of access to a number of settings and, most importantly, to install and remove third-party applications. The main task for enthusiasts seeking to expand the functionality of the e-book was to find a way to access the system sections of the device in order to be able to modify the system software (localization, multilingual keyboard) and application software (correcting a number of developer errors, expanding the functionality of the built-in reader), as well as be able to install third-party software.

Firmware and utilities from boroda

The result of the work done was the release of the package from boroda. This firmware is very similar in its capabilities to a similar package previously released by this author for the Sony PRS-T1 e-reader. Currently, the original firmware from boroda is largely a demo, as it has received further and (significant!) Development in application packages from rupor. Nevertheless, it is very useful to read the material at the link to Minimal Root with Zeam Launcher. This page describes a general approach to installing alternative software on the PRS-T2. It is somewhat more complex than the technique for the previous model. A mandatory requirement is to pre-install jailbreak using a specially prepared microSD card. In the future, the application package itself is installed by analogy with PRS-T1.

Many users who are used to working in the Zeam Launcher shell successfully install the firmware from boroda (despite the fact that there are much more advanced packages from rupor) and use the updated device without any problems. In addition to the mentioned package ( Minimal Root with Zeam Launcher), a set of recovery packages from boroda is offered for all varieties of Sony PRS-T2 (including "Russian"). As practice shows, recovery packages from boroda are the most reliable. There were situations when a similar package from amutin did not work when trying to restore a frozen reader, while the package from boroda did an excellent job. The same applies to the PRS-T1 model. If you need to restore the performance of a frozen reader, then, in our opinion, it is best to use the appropriate SD package from boroda. If you want to install an application package on a device that has previously had an alternative package installed, it is recommended that you first flash with a recovery package designed for your firmware version.

Firmware and utilities from rupor

Absolutely minimal root from
rupor. Application page.

Developed thanks to the efforts of boroda, the Sony PRS-T2 firmware modification technique formed the basis for the work of rupor, which resulted in a whole set of utilities for this reader, the most famous and popular of which is Absolutely minimal root. Just like in the case of software from boroda, before flashing with this package, you need to install a jailbreak.

Absolutely minimal root(AMR ) by rupor (like all other packages by this author) is designed to be installed on the Sony PRS-T2 e-reader over firmware version 1.0.04.11081 (US, EU) and 1.0.01.11080 (RU). If your device version is different from the one shown, you need to update the firmware to the "correct" version. Thoroughly checked and tested utilities for updating to the "correct" versions should be downloaded from (you will be guaranteed that Sony has not made any incompatible changes to their firmware with these numbers at a later date). An important note that is given on many pages of this site: if the firmware version of your device is 1.0.05.12140, and you have not previously installed a jailbreak on your reader, then you will not be able to install any alternative firmware. The same applies to the "Russian" reader, in which the firmware version 1.0.01.11080 was originally installed (by the manufacturer). If you installed this version of the firmware yourself by downloading it from the link given a few lines above, then the ability to install alternative software remains. If any alternative software was previously installed on your reader, then before updating the firmware, you must uninstall the alternative package, and after updating the firmware version, flash the reader with a suitable recovery package.

AMR includes all the necessary utilities for working with system and application software, including the file manager Total Commander version 2.0. The package allows you to work with numerous operating system settings and install third-party applications. The package is fully localized: you can select Russian language for the menu and a multilingual keyboard in the settings. Applications are launched from the third page of the main screen (the transition to this page occurs by the "Android" icon). In addition, applications can be launched through the Bar ShortCuts drop-down menu, or by assigning any of the applications to the place of the Reader Store icon on the main screen. The package includes the ability to create autolists (this is similar to Sony collections, only they are created automatically: folder and file names are used for collection names). After installing AMR, the user gets the opportunity to read books in fb2 format in the "native" reader, as well as display in this program the clock and battery charge during reading. Currently AMR is the most "advanced" and thoroughly tested package. For installation on the Sony PRS-T2 e-reader, we recommend it.

In addition to AMR, rupor offers a number of additional utilities that enhance the capabilities of the Sony PRS-T2 e-reader. Let's briefly list them. Automatic resizing procedure / data partition allows you to reallocate the device's memory ("repartition") to expand the partition intended for installing applications. The procedure is potentially dangerous, therefore, before starting work, it is imperative to make a full backup of the device's memory. For this, there is a specially developed technique from rupor, which can be found in its publication PRS-T2 - Rescue: full backup and restore devices.

Create a full backup

Installing a complete set of dictionaries- a utility that also repartitions memory (backup is required!), expanding the section for built-in Sony dictionaries, while it installs on the device all branded dictionaries available in various models ("Russian", "European", "American"). ADB support - the purpose of the utility is clear from the name. If anyone does not understand, then it means that you do not need this package. Apps2SD - allows you to transfer applications from the Data partition, which has a limited size, to the spacious user partition of the SDCard. ADB already includes support for Apps2SD , so there is no need to install ADB separately.

In addition to the software listed on the author's page, there are detailed installation instructions, links to version history, to application source codes, as well as information about how transfers work when displaying epub books, how to install an alternative keyboard, and about the ability to change the screen_off_timout parameter.

Firmware and utilities from amutin

Packages PRS-T2 Flasher from amutin are essentially AMR from rupor with additionally installed programs that allow you to read documents in a wide variety of formats: fb2, fb2.zip, txt, rtf, epub, chm, pdb, prc, mobi, djvu, doc, docx, xls , xlsx, csv, ppt, pptx, pps, ppsx and pdf. The latest packages from amutin usually include not the latest AMR releases, so the functionality of the current firmware from rupor may be wider. Another disadvantage of amutin packages is the fact that when installing packages, previously installed applications are overwritten, and they have to be reinstalled. This disadvantage is also an advantage: the success of the firmware depends little on what was installed on your reader earlier: the system partitions are completely overwritten during the flashing process. Other benefits of amutin packages include exceptional ease of installation, which allows you to put the process on stream. In the process of creating the PRS-T2 Flasher package, the firmware author installs AMR on his book, supplements the system with the necessary third-party applications, makes certain changes to localization, carefully tests and releases a ready-made image of system partitions with AMR already installed and installed and configured applications. The user only needs to flash another device in this way, and it is immediately ready for use. Due to the ease of installation, amutin's packages have gained a lot of popularity and have become popular especially with e-book sellers doing pre-flashing devices.

On its page, amutin offers two versions of the PRS-T2 Flasher package: one of them is designed for installation on the "American" and "European" Sony PRS-T2 models, the second - on the "Russian" model. The author also offers recovery packages for various firmware versions, as well as download links for the "correct" firmware update utilities. Naturally, before flashing the book, you need to update the firmware to the "correct" version, prepare a microSD card (all instructions are available) and install PRS-T2 Flasher by pressing one button (jailbreak will be installed automatically).

Conclusion

When installing alternative firmware on the Sony PRS-T2 e-reader, you must comply with all the same conditions as for the Sony PRS-T1. Download the latest stable version of the package you are interested in. Read the installation instructions carefully. Before starting work, you must fully charge the reader. You need to update the firmware to the version recommended by the author of the alternative package. If you are using the Microsoft Windows Vista, 7, 8 operating system, you must first disable User Account Control (UAC) and restart your computer. The firmware program must be launched with system administrator rights. Before starting the installation of alternative packages, it is recommended to make a full backup. In many cases, you should also flash the recovery package from beard

Design, construction

The book comes in a compact cardboard box, after removing it, it's time to throw it in the trash can. The gadget itself comes in three colors: black, white and crimson, I got the last one. The delivery kits also differ, the simplest, as in my case, and the extended one, with a cover and a flashlight for illumination. I would recommend taking the second one.

The front part is made of lacquered plastic, the back material is velvety, it is most convenient to hold the book by the bottom part. By the way, the red plastic is distracting, I would advise you to take the device in white or black. The dimensions of the book are small, 110 x 173 x 9.1 mm, weight 164 grams, slightly heavier than the iPhone 4S. The assembly is very good, the design too, there is nothing superfluous. Perhaps, it was not necessary to single out the controls so much, for Sony such an abundant use of silvery plastic is not entirely typical. In general, the design is very good, among books from other manufacturers, the PRS-T2 stands out for the better - Sony, Amazon and B&N make the most beautiful and thoughtful e-books.

Display

Diagonal display (E Ink Pearl) six inches, resolution 800x600 pixels, the display supports two-finger control. For example, this way you can change the size of the text. The paper is very good, if desired, in the settings you can change the type and size of the font, change the display of letters, I liked the setting called "Saturated" the most. - apparently saturated. Pay attention to how each letter is drawn. Reading is a pleasure.

Control

Under the display are the main control buttons: arrows for scrolling, a large Home button, return back or to the main menu, call an additional menu in a particular application. All buttons are convex, pressing with a pleasant click, blindly operating is a pleasure. Below are the power and reset buttons. Meanwhile, the most important control element is the touch screen, you can work with it both with your fingers and with the included stylus. It's very large and has a curved end so you can attach it anywhere. In general, the management is implemented very logically, I have nothing to complain about. The reaction speed of pressing is extremely high, it also leaves a pleasant impression.

Working hours

The claimed operating time is approximately 2 months - this is what they write on the official website: "Approximately up to 2 months (with the wireless function disabled), up to approximately 6 weeks (with the wireless function enabled)." In fact, the book may not live that long, but with active reading during the week, the battery indicator has become the least per division. In general, over time, everything is very good here - the only pity is that the battery indicator is not visible during reading.

Memory

1.30 GB of memory is installed, this is enough for a huge library, but if there is not enough space, then on the left side there is a slot for a microUSB memory card, it is closed with a flap.

Menus and formats

On the main desktop, Wi-Fi and battery indicators are displayed at the top, the last book you read is below, recently added books are even lower, and bookshelves, notes and applications are at the very bottom. Among them are a very intelligent browser, a very intelligent dictionary, or rather, four dictionaries, a drawing program, text memos, an image viewer, and settings. You can also set up a connection with your Evernote and Facebook accounts to send information from books to these services. The settings of the book are typical, there is nothing to add here. It is better to draw with a stylus, the book understands the finger poorly. While reading, you can change the orientation of the book, crop the page and perform other typical actions - there is a search in the book, and the ability to quickly jump to the desired page, a kind of rewind.

The book has Wi-Fi and a pretty good browser, you can download books in those formats that PRS-T2 supports. And there are not very many formats here, these are TXT, PDF, fb2, ePub plus graphic JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG.

The software update of the book is supported by air, in my opinion, this is correct - at the time of testing, the latest software is installed here. As I said above, there are no problems with the speed of work, the book is truly nimble, and this applies to literally all aspects.

Dictionary

Separately, I want to say about the dictionary, there are four types of them, you can quickly select the one you need. Click on a word while reading, you can create a note, send it to Facebook or Evernote (yes, this is a great opportunity), immediately read the translation or search the web. I usually don't use such features on other books, but here everything is done so conveniently, so simply that those responsible for the PRS-T2 at Sony can only be praised.

conclusions

The disadvantages include support for an insufficient number of formats - in my opinion, this is not a problem. There are hundreds of converters, but there are also hundreds of libraries where you can find thousands of books on FB2 or ePub. That is, the problem of formats, by and large, is sucked from the finger - if you need to work normally with PDF, then it's better to rely on a tablet. There is nothing to say about music, there is no problem that the player was removed here.

Accordingly, I had exceptionally pleasant impressions of the book, it is good in everything. The Sony PRS-T2 has thoughtful controls and a nice appearance, it is fast, it has a normal browser and Wi-Fi, and ample options for setting up the book display. Long battery life - and the usual microUSB connector for charging, which is also nice. The average cost is about 5500 rubles, which seems to me to be quite an adequate price. I hope that a backlit display will be added to the PRS-T3 and this will not greatly affect the operating time. In the meantime, PRS-T2 remains a good choice for those who just read books - it will be especially useful for lovers of books in English, the built-in dictionaries are good here, it's a pleasure to use.

First level cache (L1)

Cache memory is used by the processor to reduce access time to more frequently accessed data and instructions. L1 (level 1) cache is small and much faster than both system memory and other cache levels. If the processor does not find the requested data in L1, it continues to look for them in the L2 cache. With some processors, this search is performed simultaneously in L1 and L2.

32 kB + 32 kB (kilobytes)
Second level cache (L2)

L2 (level 2) cache is slower than L1, but in return it has a larger capacity, allowing more data to be cached. It, like L1, is much faster than system memory (RAM). If the processor does not find the requested data in L2, it continues to look for it in the L3 cache (if available) or RAM.
